About the crop
Arecanut (supari) is a cornerstone crop of the Malnad and coastal belts — Shivamogga, Sakleshpur, and the Tumakuru–Channagiri stretch. Harvesting means climbing tall, slender palms to cut ripe bunches, which makes skilled climbers the scarcest and highest-paid part of the crew. The nuts are then boiled, dried, and graded into chali or other cured forms.
The Work Cycle
- 1
Climbing & bunch cutting
Trained climbers scale each palm and lower ripe nut bunches safely to the ground.
- 2
Dehusking & boiling
Nuts are separated and boiled (for kali/chali grades) or sun-dried whole.
- 3
Drying
Boiled or raw nuts are dried over days until they reach storage moisture.
- 4
Grading & bagging
Dried arecanut is sorted by size and quality, then bagged for market.
Why it's skilled work
Climbing 15–20 metre palms and moving between them is genuinely high-risk, skilled work — experienced climbers are limited in number and command a premium wage. Safety, speed, and not damaging the palm all depend on training.
